LOCATION
Vietnam, officially the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, is the easternmost nation on the Indochina Peninsula. It is bordered by China to the north, Laos to the northwest, and Cambodia to the southwest. On the country's east coast lies the South China Sea.

The topography consists of hills and densely forested mountains, with level land covering no more than 20%. Mountains account for 40% of the area, with smaller hills accounting for 40% and tropical forests 42%.

RELIGION
Vietnam is mostly Buddhist nation (54.1%), and Christians comprise 8% of its population. The constitution provides for freedom of worship, but government restrictions still remain on the organized activities of religious groups.

CHALLENGES FOR CHRISTIANS
Vietnam is ranked No. 8 among nations that are the worst persecutors of Christians based on Open Doors 2007 “World Watch List.” Vietnam remains one of the worst persecutors of Christians. However, the U.S. Department of State lifted the country’s designation as a Country of Particular Concern for Religious Freedom in November 2006. The more the church grows the more the authorities try to stamp it out. Unregistered church meetings are broken up and their leaders thrown in jail. Local officials have repressed Protestant Believers in some parts of the Central and Northwest Highlands and other areas by forcing church gatherings to cease, closing house churches, and pressuring individuals to renounce their religious beliefs, often unsuccessfully.
